Concept

A frequency table is a table that keeps a tally of how often certain events occur. 

A Data Table has information (such as numbers and descriptions) arranged in rows and columns.

Tally marks are a quick way of keeping track of numbers in groups of five. 

Rule

When using tally marks, one vertical line is made for each of the first four numbers; the fifth number is represented by a diagonal line across the previous four.

Example

Joe and his friends went out to lunch. This tally chart shows how many of each type of food they ate. Use the given information to complete the frequency table.

Pizza		5
Burger
Fries		3
Hot Dog

Solution

Count the tallies by each food group and enter in the missing numbers.

Pizza		5
Burger		8
Fries		3
Hot Dog		6
